The Vaclav Hollar College and Secondary School of Fine Arts is the contemporary title of a state school which, for the whole period of its existence, pursues the classwork, proficiency and knowledge related to a branch of applied graphics. In the course of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century that type of specialization became a significant tool for communication within the human society. Nowadays the development of information technologies plays its crucial role and is being immediately reflected into the syllabus of our school.
The branch of graphic design at the secondary school level and the field of interactive graphics together with illustration in media at the college, form the fundamental syllabus of our school. The initial institution, the State Graphic School, established in 1920, dealt with the program based on reproduction techniques, bookbindery and photography, which were mostly related to workmanship. With only such skills the contemporary school could not stand up to competition.
High demands of proficiency and rapid development in the field led to the opening the College of Fine Arts intended as an extension study for a secondary school graduates. The three-year course of study leading to a diploma aims is targeted at the enhancement of highly skilled knowledge in graphic design, particularly in the mastering of new technologies in 2D and 3D computer graphics. In the school year 2008/2009 a new branch of study – drawing and illustration in media – was commenced. The main emphasize, within the framework of this school subject, is put on drawing which is the initial and essential element of any art work. We suppose the drawing skills are irreplaceable for recording any artistic idea at the beginning of a creative process. More information about the entrance examination of both fields of study you can find here.
A great motivation for the students of both levels of education are also exhibitions organized by the school or our students themselves. For the teaching staff these exhibitions present an opportunity to evaluate an art progress of the school and also form a solid basis for students` objective self-evaluation. The plain-air and study trips to world museums, galleries, architectural monuments and places of interest in the Czech Republic as well as abroad also form an inseparable part of the school studies. The main en’deavour of the teaching staff is to draw the future profession to our students as near as possible by assigning specific tasks. We cooperate with the vast range of companies and advertising agencies, and those out of the best of students` concepts of posters, billboards, eye catchers, calendars, logos of companies, fabric prints or wall papers are picked out for other realization, which is another motivation for them. The graphic concept does not remain the only means of the connection between the school tuition and the practical life. Our students also deal with execution of the large-scale paintings inside of painterly schools` interiors or children`s hospital wards while practicing for the team-work.
